Misconceptions about the United States of America

The United States of America is a democracy.

No, it is not. While the country does use democratic methods to elect many government officials, the United States is a Constitutional Republic. Understanding the important differences between a Democracy and a Republic is critical. The founders of the United States looked back through history and saw that a pure democracy always resulted in tyranny. Under a Democracy, the majority rules and minorities suffer. If the majority in a purely democratic country is wrong about something, then the country will do the wrong thing. In our Republic, if the majority is wrong about something, then there is hope that the checks and balances built into our branches of government will be able to prevent tragic mistakes. The country’s Constitution was carefully designed to ensure that everyone and every State would have a voice.

The United States of America is a secular capitalist country.

No, it is not. The United States government does not require any religious beliefs, but the government was set up that way by the people to make sure the government could not dictate what people should believe. As a result, the country has a mixed economy consisting of free market capitalism and socialist government intervention that appears to be free of religion. However, American culture and its economic system does not rest on capitalism, socialism, government, or any other secular foundations. Instead its foundations are the two great Christian commandments. The first is to love the Lord, your God, with all your heart. When people follow this commandment, they put doing what is right above all other interests. In other words, the outward sign that someone is following this commandment is that they do not let the “ends justify the means”. Someone does not have to be a Christian to behave this way. The second great Christian commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. When someone practices this commandment, they treat other people as they would like to be treated.

These Christian foundations have been under assault, but without those foundations there is no America. The founders of the country knew that. Everyone in America has the opportunity to live, take care of their families, and to make a fair wage or profit because of these principles. In the American Christian economic system people are not solely interested in their own financial interests. They also want others to prosper. They want the places where they shop to be able to make a profit and to continue to operate. Business owners in American culture do not cheat or overcharge their customers because they themselves do not like to be cheated. People practicing these two commandments do not conduct themselves the way Karl Marx said Capitalists behave. In a pure capitalist economy the strong and smart flourish without regard for what happens to those with less ability. America’s Christian economic system is nearly as different from Capitalism as it is from Socialism. In Socialism, the ends are put before the means. Socialism promises equal outcomes for everyone and then sets about achieving that by taking from those with ability and giving to those with more need. In both Socialism and pure Capitalism, the result is similar. Those who have power decide who gets and who gives. Only countries following the Christian commandments have a truly free society where people can pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Christianity is the foundation of American culture and the American dream. The United States of America was established as a Christian country with a Christian economic system and will continue to exist only if these two Christian commandments are practiced by its citizens.

America does have freedom of religion; that is quite different from freedom from religion. As you can see in the preceding paragraphs, Christian principles are baked into the entire country. A Christian country is one where people of all faiths are free to live and practice their beliefs if they do not hurt others and if they follow the law. This can be hard for non-Christians to understand. Christianity is the only religion of tolerance because it is the only one that confesses that all people are sinners who must be born again to be saved. Every person on this planet is equally flawed in the eyes of God. Other religions teach that man must do something to be right in the eyes of their gods. Only Christianity teaches that people are saved when they are born again, not by their own actions. Whether people like it or admit it does not matter, Jesus Christ dominates this world and is the head of the United States.
